The LNER would give these initial locomotives the classification of D14. The next batch (order D56) was started in December 1903, and added a Belpaire firebox to the design. The 4ft 9in diameter boiler was kept.

By the time of the 1923 Grouping into the LNER 20 of the S46 class had been rebuilt as D56s, fifteen of these with superheaters, whilst 34 of the seventy original D56s were superheated. The S46 class engines still with round-topped boilers became class D-14, whilst the D56s and rebuilds from S46 were class D-15.

These locomotives were built with 4 feet 9 inch round topped boilers. Then followed seven batches (each of ten locomotives) built between 1904 and 1911and these had Belpaire boilers and became the GER D56 class which were later to become the LNER D15 class.

The GER adopted the Belpaire firebox boiler as standard for larger engines after 1900. It was fitted to new Claud Hamilton 4-4-0s from 1903, the new engines being built to Letter Account D56, and thus being known as class D56, as opposed to the earlier engines with round-topped fireboxes, class S46.
