The landing craft mechanized (LCM) is a military landing craft designed for carrying personnel and vehicles from ship to shore without requiring a pier or other shore-based structure. Multiple different models with varying size, capacity, and power plants were produced starting in 1920.

The LCM 3 is developed in two different versions: cargo and troop transport. Its tactical role is to increase the firepower of a landed force. Indeed, the LCM 3 is capable of embarking and disembarking a 30-ton tank, which can subsequently support the infantry as close as possible during an amphibious assault.

2013年5月4日 · In just over 60 hours Higgins had a prototype built, the production version becoming the LCM (2). Following further development to increase capacity, the LCM (3) entered service in 1943.

The craft is a 56-foot twin-screw, welded-steel craft with forward cargo well and bow ramp. The design of the boat permits its transportation aboard larger vessels. In 1959, the LCM-3 was replaced with the larger 70 ton LCM-8.

Suitably modified, these ‘Higgins boats’ became the standard tank landing craft for both navies – beating a design by the USN’s Bureau of Ships. In the standardised nomenclature of 1942 onwards, this vessel became the Landing Craft Mechanised Mark 3, or LCM (3).
