While the L5 Society failed to achieve the goal of human settlements in space, it served as a focal point for many of the people who later became known in fields such as nanotechnology, memetics, extropianism, cryonics, transhumanism, artificial intelligence, and tether propulsion, such as K. Eric Drexler, Robert Forward, and Hans Moravec.

There are five Lagrange points for the Sun–Earth system, and five different Lagrange points for the Earth–Moon system. L 1, L 2, and L 3 are on the line through the centers of the two large bodies, while L 4 and L 5 each act as the third vertex of an equilateral triangle formed with the centers of the two large bodies.

2012年12月15日 · The L5 Society was put together because people wanted to do exactly that. They wanted to start building at L5, and eventually create space colonies filled with plants, animals, and people.

A concept to build giant stations in space far from Earth and the Moon, L-5 colonies would be cities in space, located in a gravitational node in the Earth-Moon system. These colonies would be home to tens of thousands of people each, and serve as bases for building solar power satellites to generate electricity for Earth.
