Kingfishers have been recorded diving between 2 cm and 1 metre into water to take prey. In estuarine mudflats the diet is mainly small crabs. In freshwater habitats a range of tadpoles, freshwater crayfish and small fish are taken.

2022年12月7日 · Kōtare, or Sacred Kingfisher, are the glimpse of colour you may see dipping in and out of a riverside or silhouetted on a powerline. Often you’ll only see a flash of teal and a splash before they return to their lookout hidden away in the mangroves. Kōtare have an iridescent blue cape from head to tail with cream and yellow breast feathers.

Fish form only a small part of their diet but whitebait are taken in the lower reaches of the rivers in spring and goldfish in ponds are not safe. They have been photographed diving into the water after prey with their wings clapped to their sides like a gannet.

Adult British kingfishers—a species which has been studied more intensively than ours catch fish on four out of five attempts. Youngsters succeed on fewer than one dive in ten, and at times, in their hunger, will dive repeatedly without allowing time for their feathers to dry.

The kingfisher is a distinctive bird with a green-blue back, buff to yellow undersides and a large black bill. It has a broad black eye-stripe, and a white collar in adults. The females are slightly greener and duller. Species information: Kingfisher on NZ Birds Online.

What does Kotare usually eat? Sacred Kingfishers don’t necessarilly only feed on fish. Their diet depends on their location and whatever terrestrial aquatic vertebrate and invertebrate are available. Such as earthworms, insects, beetles, crustaceans, baby crabs and fish. Kingfishers can dive up to 2 cm to snatch their prey in the water.

The Sacred Kingfisher, Kotare, relishes this regal diet. He is not (surprisingly) not that fussed with fish but will raid your goldfish pond when wild food is scarce.
