2022年12月7日 · Kōtare, or Sacred Kingfisher, are the glimpse of colour you may see dipping in and out of a riverside or silhouetted on a powerline. Often you’ll only see a flash of teal and a splash before they return to their lookout hidden away in the mangroves. Kōtare have an iridescent blue cape from head to tail with cream and yellow breast feathers.

Fish form only a small part of their diet but whitebait are taken in the lower reaches of the rivers in spring and goldfish in ponds are not safe. They have been photographed diving into the water after prey with their wings clapped to their sides like a gannet.

Such as earthworms, insects, beetles, crustaceans, baby crabs and fish. Kingfishers can dive up to 2 cm to snatch their prey in the water.
