In the manga, when Gon and Killua go back to Whale Island after Heaven's Arena, Killua asks about Kon and Gon explains that they probably won't see Kon because female foxbears hate the smell of humans and interacting with humans might hurt Kon's status as Ruler of the Forest because other animals might lose respect for him.
