“A relatively new platycerium species is the hybrid P. Mt Kitshakood which is a cross of P. Ridleyii and P. coronarium. Mt Kitshakood is thought to have derived its name from Mt Kitchakut in Thailand where Thai Buddhists would go to pray. It is said “You get one wish and only once a year, all wishes will come true if you can get up there!.”

Platycerium Kitshakood has the best features of both of its parents. It has the large, showy sterile fronds of Platycerium coronarium, and the antler-like fertile fronds of Platycerium ridleyi. The sterile fronds are a deep green color, and they can grow up to 2 feet long.

The hybrid, which was named Platycerium × kitshakoodiense, could produce spore patches. However, the spores from young plants were non-viable. After producing spore patches for two years, spores with 50% viability were finally attained. The F 2 population showed segregation of shield and fertile fronds.
