Welcome to the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts! The Kislak Center is the principal site for rare books, manuscripts, and archives at the University of Pennsylvania and a hub for events, exhibits, and research. The Kislak Center is open to all.

Innovative businessman, philanthropist, aviator, collector, history enthusiast, and patron of education and ideas, Jay I. Kislak was born June 6, 1922, in Hoboken, New Jersey. Mr. Kislak spent his life exploring unusual places, ideas and ventures, forging relationships and assembling extraordinary treasures, which he generously shared.

The Kislak Family Foundation is a private philanthropic foundation based in Miami Lakes, Florida. The mission of the foundation is supporting leadership and innovation in the fields of education, arts and humanities, animal welfare and environmental preservation.

The Jay I. Kislak Collection at the University of Miami Libraries houses a large collection that focuses on cultural encounters and their legacies across the Americas. These materials include rare books, manuscripts, contemporary artists’ books and zines, graphic art, maps, photographs, and broadsides.

The Kislak Collection includes approximately 170 Mayan flasks that vary in detail and size. Most, according to recent scholarship, contained "May," a mixture of powdered native tobacco and calcareous lime used for ritual and magical protection. Each flask is decorated with images or glyphs representing the intended use.
