Juab County, sometimes called the “Key” County, is located in West-Central Utah and extends westward from the mountains of the Uinta National Forest, near the center of the state, to the arid desert lands on the Nevada border. At its narrowest point, Juab County is 125 miles long and 25 miles wide. It covers an area of 3,412 square miles.

Juab County was formed in 1852, including portions of what is now Nevada. The size of the county was reduced in 1854 and 1856 along with various other changes through the years until the curent borders were set. The first real settlement came in 1851 when Mormon pioneers settled Nephi. They relied mainly on agriculture for their livelihoods.

With peaks, deserts, and forests, Juab__is hiking. Numerous trails provide outstanding hiking opportunities off of the Mount Nebo National Scenic Byway. Two of the more popular are Summit Trail (6.7 miles) and Loafer Mountain (5.7 miles). The 2-mile (round trip) hike to Paul Bunyan’s Woodpile is a unique little trek of moderate difficulty.
