The Jikany Nuer are a section of the Nuer people who mainly live in the eastern part of Upper Nile state in South Sudan, particularly around Nasir in Nasir County. [1] During the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983–2005), between 1993 and 2004 the Lou Nuer and Jikany Nuer of Nasir County were in violent conflict.

Although these stories vary depending on the narrators, in the present day, Kiir descendants are known as Jikany, and they are living in both the Eastern and the Western part of the Nuer land in the present day Upper Nile and Unity States respectively. Nuer is also known as Naadh or Naath. Dialects of include Dor, Eastern Jikany, Abigar, Western Jikany, Cien, Thognaath, Lou, Nyuong, Thiang, Bul Chol, Gawaar, Jagei, Laak, Leek and Dok. Nuer is written with a version of the Latin alphabet using an orthography adopted at the Rejaf Language Conference in 1928.

Tut Jikany is a prominent figure in South Sudan, serving as the founder and Chief Executive Officer of the South Sudan Democracy Initiative (SSDNI).
