Don’t misunderstand me, however. Life is serious, and someone who laughs about everything fails to see the tragedy and brokenness of a world that has turned its back on God. Jesus undoubtedly smiled when little children were brought to Him—but He also wept over the sins of Jerusalem (see Mark 10:14; Luke 19:41).

Jesus wept over the failure of His people to repent and believe the Good News of God’s love and forgiveness—and so should we. Most of all, the Bible says, He was “a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering” (Isaiah 53:3).

It’s a good thing that when it comes to being saved, we don’t rely on our up-and-down feelings. Only the facts matter—the fact that Jesus died for our sins and rose again, and the fact that if we have given our lives to Him, He has promised to forgive us and save us. This weekend, Meskel Square was transformed into a place of worship where hundreds of thousands of people heard a message of hope and God’s love. On the second and final night of the event called Encountering God Ethiopia, the square was so full, thousands of people spilled into the nearby streets to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Instead He wants to heal those hurts, and He wants to cleanse your soul of these poisons and fill you with His peace. Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you” (John 14:27). Is this possible? Yes—and the reason is because Jesus Christ was willing to die for you.

Our world is filled with hatred, anger, conflict, turmoil, and insecurity. Jesus said the basic problem is in our hearts—and the reason is because we are alienated from our Creator. Instead of giving God His rightful place at the center of our lives, we have substituted the gods of this world that claim to satisfy mankind’s longings.

The Gospels don’t tell us very much about Jesus’ childhood; they focus instead on Jesus’ public ministry, which only lasted about three years. Hundreds of years after Jesus lived, some people made up stories about His childhood, but that’s all they were — stories with no basis in fact.
