Jef Verheyen is known as a painter of light and colour, but he was also inspired and guided by the principles of geometry, as explained in the publications of Matila Ghyka, Le nombre d'or and The Geometry of Art.

Jef Jozef Verheyen (Itegem 6 juli 1932 – Apt, 2 maart 1984) was een Belgisch kunstschilder. Verheyen studeerde aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten te Antwerpen en aan het Hoger instituut in de klassen schilderen, tekenen en keramiek (bij Olivier Strebelle, 1946-1954). Aan dat instituut leerde hij zijn latere vrouw Dani Franque kennen.

Jef Verheyen worked during the years 1956 - 1978 as one of the last ‘modernist’ painters of the 20th century. In his works nature and colour are in dialogue with each other. In his quest towards visualising purity, his work evolves towards an absolute total experience of light and colour.

The Belgian ZERO artist Jef Verheyen (1932-1984) became known as the painter of light streams and colour spectra. He experimented not only with light, but also with movement and the invisible as means to evoke natural mechanisms and to reveal universal interrelationships between human beings and the surrounding world.
