Anyway, when I saw that panel being shared on FB, it surprised me to learn that Izutsumi is more cat and less human. Like 80% cat, 20% human. I thought it was the other way around. A human Izutsumi was imbued with a cat soul. Like Falin’s dragon/chimera merging. Turns out it was a cat yokai with a small human soul imbued in it.

Izutsumi thought she needed to be a “human” to be loved and then she learns that she was always human and there was nothing wrong with her and she has people who love her who would care if she were gone. All packaged in the idea that the archetype of the selfish loner is childish, and comparing it to a child refusing to eat their veggies.

AFAIK, there's speculation that Izutsumi comes from the Dungeon Meshi equivalent of the Ainu, an indigenous tribe in Japan. This is based on the clothing that Izutsumi's mother wears in the succubus chapter. There's real-life tension between the Ainu identity and the Japanese identity.
