View of the ruins of Izapa. Izapa is a very large pre-Columbian archaeological site located in the Mexican state of Chiapas; it is best known for its occupation during the Late Formative period. The site is situated on the Izapa River, a tributary of the Suchiate River, near the base of the volcano Tacaná, the sixth tallest mountain in Mexico.

Izapa is situated along the west bank of the Izapa River, and near the frontier with Guatemala. It is located outside the small village of Tuxtla Chico in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Chiapas that runs along the Pacific coast.

The most important site is that of Izapa, to the east of Tapachula (Chiapas), in Mexican territory at a distance of several kilometers from the Rio Suchiate. What is spectacular at Izapa is the stone sculpture: 22 Stelae and 19 altars, plus other monuments, all covered with bas-reliefs.

The iZapa Bush and Game Lodge is nestled in the Bobbejaansberg mountains just 98 km from Johannesburg. The lodge is set on a 1000-hectare game reserve, with natural bush and an abundance of game and birdlife. The area is malaria-free, but that doesn’t mean it’s not wild.

Izapa, type site of the Izapan civilization, is a huge temple centre near modern Tapachula, Chiapas, on the hot Pacific coast plain. Its approximately 80 pyramidal mounds were built from earth and clay faced with river boulders.

Izapa was first settled around 1500 BC and was at its height from 800 BC to 100 BC, making it the oldest of the major Maya sites in Mexico. It started as a small village with an agrarian economy. The oldest structures at the site are on the north side of Group B on the site map around what is identified as Mound 30.
