The pitch of these hourglass-shaped drums can be changed by squeezing the ties that join the two drumheads between the left arm and the torso while the drum is being struck with a curved stick.

The largest of the hourglass drums is the iya ilu ( mother drum ). It is used chiefly as a talking drum. In performance, the drummer can alter the pitch of the instrument to correspond with the high, middle or low sounds of the Yoruba language.

Extant literature has shown that from ancient times to date, the Yoruba Dundun drum which exists in typologies has been a viable means of worship, entertainment, and communication. Its association with the Ayan Agalu (deity of drum) dynasty makes it a subject of inheritance.

The Iya-ilu dundun is the only dundun drum that has small bells fixed round its surface, which jingle as the drum is beaten thereby adding to the melody of the Iya-ilu dundun drum beats.
