IMZ (M-72) The M-72 was a motorcycle built by the Soviet Union. Conceived as a replacement for the two heavy motorcycles used by the Red Army, the TIZ-AM-600 and PMZ-A-750, both of which had performed unsatisfactorily during the Winter War against Finland and were considered outdated designs.

IMZ produced a new improved model M-72M from 1955-1960. KMZ also made improved model M-72H (M-72N Eng.) (cyrillic letter H is the latin letter N) 1956-1959. Notes: The M in M72 stands for Mototsikl which equates to the German R for Rad as in Motorrad. There were two plants to build the M72, one in Moscow and one in Leningrad (St. Petersburg).

Based on BMW R-71, the pre-WWII model, the Soviet heavy motorcycle M-72 was produced from 1941 to the mid-1950s. The design work was commenced in 1939 when the Soviet government, alarmed with Hitler’s ambitions for expanding German-controlled territory, started the rearmament of the Red Army.

In 1941 M-72 production began in Moscow (ZiS), at the end of 1941 equipment was moved to Irbit, where IMZ appeared. Some amount of M-72 has been produced in Gorkii (repotedly only assembled from Moscow parts). Since early 1950's - available in shops. Before that time they were only for army.

Motorcycles M-72 were produced predominantly with a sidecar attached, although some solos made appearances for the duties of escort and the like. M-72 is produced at IMZ in Irbit from 1942 until 1955. A subsequent model, the M-72M was produced from 1955 until 1960. The M72 is often referred to as "Ural" or "Dnepr".

2024年11月3日 · Ab 1959 wurde die M72 in Irbit eingestellt und die Fertigungsanlagen nach China verkauft (oder verschenkt). Ab 1959 wurden dann von IMZ (Ural) nur noch OHV- Motoren gebaut (ab der M61). In Kiew wurde der SV minimal abgeändert dann in der K750 weitergeführt bis hin zur MT 12, die bis 1984 gebaut wurde.
