The Ilyushin Il-62 (Russian: Илью́шин Ил-62; NATO reporting name: Classic) is a Soviet long-range narrow-body jetliner conceived in 1960 by Ilyushin. As a successor to the popular turboprop Il-18 and with capacity for almost 200 passengers and crew, the Il-62 was the world's largest jet airliner when first flown in 1963.

The four engined Il-62 was the Soviet Union's first long range jetliner designed for intercontinental flights such as Moscow to New York nonstop. The prototype Il-62 was first unveiled in September 1962.

On January 3rd, 1963, the Soviet Union's Ilyushin Il-62 performed its first flight. At the time, it was the world's largest jetliner, going on to pioneer long-haul flying with the likes of the Vickers VC10, Boeing 707, and Douglas DC-8.

The basic IL-62 was announced in September 1962 during Khrushchev's regime; the aircraft will carry up to 186 passengers, but other seating arrangements provide more leg room with 114 or 168 passengers.

Medium to long range airliner. In service since 1967. Russian version of the VICKERS VICKERS VC-10 concept. Improved production Il-62M, appeared in 1971. Third model Il-62MK, with higher MTOW and passenger capacity, since 1978. Production ceased in 1994. More than 250 aircraft were built including over 75 for export.

The Il-62 was powered by four NK-8-4 turbofans with about a 1:1 bypass ratio, and 99.0 kN (10,100 kgp / 22,273 lbf) pounds thrust each; the outer engines had thrust reversers, a new feature for Soviet aircraft at that time.
