Ijolite is a rare rock type of considerable importance from a mineralogical and petrological standpoint. The word is derived from the first syllable of the Finnish words such as Iivaara, Iijoki · and Ii, all geographical names in Finland, and the Ancient Greek Xiflos, a stone.

Named by Ramsay in 1891 for Ijola (Iivaara), Finland. A nephelinolite consisting of 30-70% nepheline with pyroxene. A series of plutonic rocks containing nepheline and 30% to 60% mafic minerals, generally clinopyroxene, and including minor titanite, apatite, and melanite; also, any rock of that series.

Ijolite is a coarse-grained feldspar-free rock composed essentially of nepheline (50–70%) and pyroxene. When nepheline exceeds 70% the name urtite applies and if nepheline is ≮50% the rock is called melteigite .
