Idle can be opened as an edit window or a shell window. To get the the idle edit window from the shell window is very simple if you know how. Here's a way to reset IDLE's default working directory for MacOS if you launch Idle as an application by double-clicking it. You need a different solution if you launch Idle from a command line in Terminal. This solution is a permanent fix. You don't have to rechange the directory everytime you launch IDLE. I wish it were easier.

Line numbers were added to the IDLE editor two days ago and will appear in the upcoming 3.8.0a3 and later 3.7.5. For new windows, they are off by default, but this can be reversed on the Setting dialog, General tab, Editor section. For existing windows, there is a new Show (Hide) Line Numbers entry on the Options menu. There is currently no hotkey.

But, giving this path to Komodo causes it to say that 1 is returned. This appears to be a failure as IDLE doesn't start up. I thought I'd avoid the shortcut and just use the exact path. I go to the start menu, find the shortcut for IDLE, right click to look at the properties. The target is grayed out, but says "Python 2.5.2".
