2024年10月24日 · In 1949, after being shown at the Leipzig Trade Fair in 1948, the IFA F9 went into production, at the former Auto Union plant. IFA stole a lead over the West Germans by having the first use of the water cooled 3 cylinder 900cc two stroke engine that had been developed by Auto Union before the war and was part of the 1938 DKW F9 prototype.

The combination of the 3 cylinder, 32 hp engine and four speed gearbox gives the F9 reasonable powers of acceleration. On tarred roads we got the following times: 0-50 km/h 9.5 seconds, 0-80 km/h 20 secs, and 1 kilometre from standing start 50 secs. The engine noise is rather intrusive, especially in older models.

Erst nach dem Krieg wurde in Zwickau das Fahrzeug als IFA F9 zur Serienreife geführt und dort in kleinen Stückzahlen produziert. Die Fertigungsverlagerung nach Eisenach erfolgte bis zum dortigem Produktionsstart 05.03.1953.
