Holmul is a pre-Columbian archaeological site of the Maya civilization located in the northeastern Petén Basin region in Guatemala near the modern-day border with Belize. In spite of its relatively modest size, Holmul was important to both the Tikal and the Kaanul (Kan/"Snake") dynasties.

Welcome to the website for the Holmul Archaeological Project. The project, known as Proyecto Arqueológico Holmul in Spanish, has been conducting research at the ancient Maya city of Holmul in Guatemala since 2000.

The ancient Maya city of Holmul (17 18′ 14.792″ N, 89 15′ 29.264 W) is located on an upland ridge where the Holmul River turns from an easterly course north towards the Bay of Chetumal. It was first settled around 1000 BC.

The Holmul Archaeological Project began in 2000 under the direction of PI Dr. Francisco Estrada Belli as a Boston University expedition. It was later supported by Vanderbilt University until 2008 and it is now backed by Boston University and (since 2012)Tulane University.

Holmul is a major Maya city in northeastern Petén, an area of the Maya Lowlands that is still vastly unknown. Despite early exploration of the site, little was known about the extent of its urban area and the relative size of its ceremonial center when compared to other Maya cities.

Research at Holmul is multi-disciplinary in nature, combining environmental studies (aided by remote sensing, GIS, and geological surveys), archaeological mapping, and analysis by specialists (ceramics, lithics, and botanical, faunal and osteological remains), with architectural studies, iconography, and epigraphy.
