Built-in box gutters are literally metal-lined wooden boxes built into the eaves of a house. They are lined with lead, tin, terne metal or copper and have crown moldings on the front. Box gutters channel water to a metal flange at the end of the gutter trough and into a downspout.

The rectangular box with canted sides has a loose-fitting, single-board cover with two cleats or rails attached near the ends to facilitate moving it. The cleats also help keep the cover flat. The canted end boards of the trough fit into shallow grooves cut into the long sides.

The water carries away the clay, sand, gravel and stones, and leaves the gold in the bottom of the sluice where it is caught by gravity and the use of quicksilver.
