Interstate pipelines are the ‘highways’ of natural gas transmission. Natural gas that is transported through interstate pipelines travels at high pressure in the pipeline, at pressures anywhere from 200 to 1500 pounds per square inch (psi).

The transmission system is responsible for moving large quantities of gas over long distances (often from supply basins to consuming regions). Transmission systems typically operate at pressures between 600 and 1,200 psi (pounds per square inch).

Transmission pipelines are generally larger and operate at a higher pressure than distribution pipelines. Transmission pipelines move natural gas from compressor stations and storage facilities to regulators.

Gas Transmission Pipeline: Generally large diameter pipelines that operate at pressures above 200 psi and transport gas from supply points to the gas distribution system. High Pressure Gas Distribution Main: Pipelines that operate at pressures above 60 psi and deliver gas in smaller volumes to the medium pressure distribution system.

The standard covers the design, construction, inspection, testing, operation and maintenance of steel pipelines and certain associated installations for the transmission of dry natural gas, with or without odorisation, at MOP exceeding 7 bar and not exceeding 100 bar.
