Henry Drysdale Dakin FRS [1] (12 March 1880 – 10 February 1952) was an English chemist. [2] He was born in London as the youngest of 8 children to a family of steel merchants from Leeds. As a school boy, he conducted water analysis with the Leeds City Analyst.

During an apprenticeship as an analyst for the city of Leeds he learned to analyze the city’s gas works and water. This experience inspired Dakin to further his studies at Leeds University, earning his Doctor of Science degree in 1909.
