Possible complications of survivors of helium gas inhalation consist of effects of hypoxia. While mixtures of helium and oxygen have been extensively studied and shown to reduce airway resistance, pure helium gas merely displaces all available oxygen. Short durations of exposure to pure helium gas has no adverse effects.
