The Heinkel He 178 was an experimental aircraft designed and produced by the German aircraft manufacturer Heinkel. It was the world's first aircraft to fly using the thrust from a turbojet engine. The He 178 was developed to test the jet propulsion concept devised by the German engineer Hans von Ohain during the mid-1930s.

The He 178 was designed as a shoulder wing, mixed construction, jet engine-powered aircraft. As it was to be built in a short period of time and to serve as an experimental aircraft, Ernst Heinkel insisted that its overall construction should be as simple as possible.

The Heinkel He 178 was the world’s first turbojet powered aircraft, which flew on August 27, 1939. The aircraft was generated from Ernst Heinkel's vision for high-speed aircraft. In cooperation with Hans Joachim Pabst von Ohain, Heinkel funded the construction.
