HPV tests detect the strains of human papillomavirus that put you at risk of developing cervical cancer. They’re often performed as part of a routine Pap smear. A positive result doesn’t mean you have cancer.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus that can affect different parts of your body. There are over 100 types of HPV, including strains of HPV that cause warts on your hands, feet and face. About 30 HPV strains can affect your genitals, including your vulva, vagina, cervix, penis and scrotum, as well as your rectum and anus.

HPV is a small, nonenveloped, double-stranded DNA virus with a genome of approximately 8000 nucleotides. There are more than 118 different types of HPV, and approximately 40 different HPVs can infect the human anogenital mucosa.

If the results of an HPV test say that mRNA E6/E7 was detected, it means the test is positive for HPV. Not all HPV tests look for these proteins. Some tests work by looking for the DNA of specific types of high-risk HPVs.
