The HP-83, HP-85, and HP-86A did not have built-in HP-IB but HP-IB support could be added. (HP-IB was built-in to the HP-86B, HP-87 and 87XM) The HP-86 was available with 64K or 128K of RAM. These models featured a wider CRT that displayed 16 rows of 80-character lines. (Graphics mode was the same with the image centered in the display.)

The HP-86 was a high-end version of the HP-83 and HP-85 computers, offering more main memory, and a larger (external) monitor. This line of computers was intended for technical and scientific applications. My HP-86A comes with a 12" black-and-white monitor, a single 5.25" disk drive, and a dot-matrix printer.

HP 86A/86B/87A/87XM ROM query Message #1 Posted by john on 16 Dec 2005, 5:43 p.m. Hi, Can someone clarify please which ROMs are built into which of the following machines? 86A. 86B. 87A - none (only one of these I have) 87XM. I recall (probably incorrectly!) that some of these have the EDISK ROM built in, not sure of any other ROMs. Thanks, John

Two versions og the HP-86 were successively released: The 86-A had 64 KB of RAM and was fully compatible with the 87-A. It had built-in interfaces for a printer and dual floppy drives. Internally, these interfaces were seen as HP-IB devices. The 86-B had 128 KB of RAM and an HP-IB port instead of the printer/FDD interfaces.

HP 86 (A) disk interface specification - forum.vcfed.org
2017年11月21日 · does anyone have the interface specification or pinout of the disk interface on the HP-86a please ? Note - its not the same as the HP-IB connectors on the 86B - the 86a has Centronics style connectors that (AFAIK) could only be used with the 9130a drives. The pinout is shown in the service manual for the HP 9130K on page 2-2.
* The Series-80 family was diversified still further with the introduction of the HP-86A in July 1982. This was essentially an 87A built in a highly modular fashion and more RAM. (Again, the machine was marked "HP-86", not HP-86A.) The 86A used an external monitor (either 9-inch -- 82912A -- or 13-inch -- 82913A -- note that these monitors had
