The EMD GP40 is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between November 1965 and December 1971. It has an EMD 645E3 16- cylinder engine generating 3,000 hp (2,240 kW).

Dec 20, 2024 · In late 1965 EMD advertised nine new models equipped with this new engine, offered in a variety of horsepower ratings, sizes, and wheel arrangements. Although, not every railroad at that time needed - or could handle - the big SD38s, SD40s, and SD45s.

CN 9400–9632 are GP40-2L, 9633–9677 are GP40-2W. CN 9668–9677 are former GO Transit units purchased in 1991. Ten to CN 9668–9677 in 1991. One (703) to Miami Tri-Rail, later sold to Aberdeen, Carolina & Western #703. Union Pacific has rebuilt 129 of their GP40's and GP40-2's into GP40N 's at their Jenk's shop.

Brand-new DRGW GP40-2 idling at Denver, CO in 1983. Many are still in service today on various different railroads throughout the US and North America, though many have since been retired, scrapped, rebuilt, de-rated, or downgraded.
