Gnetum is a genus of gymnosperms, the sole genus in the family Gnetaceae within the Gnetophyta. They are tropical evergreen trees, shrubs and lianas. Unlike other gymnosperms, they possess vessel elements in the xylem.

Gnetum gnemon is a gymnosperm species of Gnetum, its native area spans from Mizoram and Assam in India down south through Malay Peninsula, Malay Archipelago and the Philippines in southeast Asia to the western Pacific islands. [3]

2024年10月8日 · What is Gnetum? Gnetum represents a unique genus within the Gnetaceae family and the Gnetales order, characterized as a group of gymnosperms. The Gnetales order consists of three distinct extant genera: Ephedra, Gnetum, and Welwitschia, each exhibiting remarkable morphological differences.

1. Distribution of Gnetum: Gnetum, represented by about 40 species is confined to the tropical and humid regions of the world. Nearly all species, except G. microcarpum, occur below an altitude of 1500 metres. Five species (Gnetum contractum, G. gnemon, G. montanum, G. ula and G. latifolium) have been reported from India (Fig. 13.1).

Gnetum (35 species) inhabits a variety of humid, tropical lowland, riparian, and swamp rainforests (> 1000 m above sea level) of South East Asia, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, the Americas (i.e., South America and as far north as Costa Rica), and Africa (Croat, 1970; Markgraf, 1951, 1965, 1972).

Gnetum is the only genus in the plant family Gnetaceae. They are gymnosperms: their seeds are naked, whereas the seeds of flowering plants are covered. [2] Plants in Gnetum are evergreen. Most of them are woody vines, but some are big enough to be trees. They grow in warmer, tropical regions of the world. [2] There are over 50 species living.
