It is located at the foot of the Flaming Mountain, about 46 kilometers (about 29 miles) southeast of Turpan.

Gaochang Ancient City, located in Turpan offers a glimpse into Xinjiang’s rich past. With a history spanning over a thousand years, Gaochang was once a prosperous oasis city along the Silk Road. The city's ruins showcase its former grandeur, with remnants of ancient walls, gates, temples and residential areas.

Gaochang (Kocho, Kharakhoja or "King City") is the site of an ancient oasis city built on the northern rim of the inhospitable Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang, China. Anciet Gaochang city was built in the 1st century BC. Gaochang served long as a busy important trading center, and a stopping point for merchant traders traveling on the Silk Route.

Located about 50km (30mi) east of Turpan, the now-ruined city of Gaochang developed from a Han-era fort into the capital of a small independent kingdom, then a Tang prefectural capital (640), and finally a Uighur capital (Khocho or Qoco, ca. 840). The site was abandoned in the 14th century after repeated attacks from the Mongols.

Located at the foot of the Flaming Mountain, 30 kilometers southeast of Turpan City in China Xinjiang Province, the ancient Gaochang Ruins are all that is left of an ancient oasis city that was a major stopping point on the Ancient Silk Road. The ruins are a favorite with visitors and are easily accessed.
