Gan De (Chinese: 甘德; fl. 4th century BC), also known as the Lord Gan (Gan Gong), was an ancient Chinese astronomer and astrologer born in the State of Qi. [1]

Gan De was one of the earliest of the Chinese astronomers. We know nothing of Gan De's life and very little about his work. The dates we give are guesses, although we do know that at least they are roughly correct (we do know for instance that he was making observations in 365 BC).

Chinese astronomer known for his star catalogue and his studies of sunspots. Along with Shih Shen and Wu Xien (Wu Hsien), Gan De was one of three scholars who independently developed a star catalogue that would, centuries later, be included in a single star map.

Gan De is credited with the first observation of Jupiter. He described the planet as brilliantly radiant, noting its distinct appearance. Notably, he recorded witnessing one of Jupiter's moons (either Ganymede or Callisto) with his unaided eye in 364 BCE.

As one of the earliest astronomers in China, Gan De, in the fourth century BCE, made many observations of the heavenly bodies, especially Jupiter, which was then called Suixing (the year‐star). He wrote two books: Suixing Jing (Treatise on Jupiter) and Tianwen Xingzhan (Astrological Prognostications).
