Gammaridae is a family of amphipods. In North America they are included among the folk taxonomic category of "scuds", [1] and otherwise gammarids is usually used as a common name. They have a wide distribution, centered on Eurasia, and are euryhaline as a lineage, inhabiting fresh to marine waters.

Gammaridea is one of the suborders of the order Amphipoda, comprising small, shrimp -like crustaceans. Until recently, in a traditional classification, it encompassed about 7,275 (92%) of the 7,900 species of amphipods described by then, in approximately 1,000 genera, divided among around 125 families. [1] .

Baikalian gammarids (Gammaridae) probably constitute one of the most spectacular examples of adaptive radiation among contemporary freshwater invertebrates2,28,29. In Baikal, they have penetrated almost all possible ecological niches.

Gammarids represent important keystone species in aquatic ecosystems because they play a central role in the detritus cycle (e.g., litter breakdown processes) and constitute an important element in food webs by providing prey for secondary consumers. Furthermore, they are known to be sensitive to a wide range of chemical stressors.
