The modern koto originates from the gakusō used in Japanese court music (gagaku). It was a popular instrument among the wealthy; the instrument was considered a romantic one. Some literary and historical records indicate that solo pieces for koto existed centuries before sōkyoku, the music of the solo koto genre, was established.

Tennōji Gakuso, based at Shitennōji Temple, is one of the three major Gagaku troupes that have carried the tradition of Japanese court music since the Heian period, alongside Ōuchi Gakuso in Kyoto and Nanto Gakuso in Nara.

Together with Haruno Keiko's Rōkyoku (Naniwa-bushi), we will present the 140-year history of Garyōkai by performing key pieces of Tennōji Bugaku that marked significant historical moments. Additionally, we will explore creative endeavors such as a session combining Rakugo and Rōkyoku, as well as a musical collaboration between Rōkyoku and Gagaku.
