The sand is found in the channel between Mer, Dauar and Waier islands in the Torres Strait and it washes up on the western beach of Mer. A grain of this sand has been digitally magnified, and 3D printed to create the black stars within the work. Mabo recalls being shown this sand by her father when she was a young girl visiting the Torres Straits.

Mabo began studies in visual arts in 2004 at the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE, and was subsequently included in various group exhibitions. In 2006 and 2007 she held solo exhibitions at the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, Townsville, and has exhibited annually at the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair.
