As we reflect on Selection 021, we wanted to share with you firsthand experiences from the GORUCK Cadre themselves, the men behind the pain.

Selection is a 48+ hour individual event and dubbed the toughest endurance event in the world. Our Cadre will enforce a standard adopted from our roots in Special Forces Assessment and Selection. Those participants who do not meet the standard at any point will be performance dropped at our discretion.

One of the things that make GORUCK events so amazing are the Cadre. All GORUCK Cadre are either current or former members of the special forces and their lessons, leadership, and beat-downs are one of the things that bring people back again and again for GORUCK events. But, is there a “best” cadre in the GORUCK ranks?

When I first came on to GORUCK as a Cadre, it was for the New York City 9/11 events in 2015. That opened my eyes to what we do as a company, and even greater as a community, in honor of those we lost back on 11 September 2001. I witnessed the Cadre’s devotion, dedication, and delicacy when presenting these events to the GRTs.

At Selection, to win as a Cadre is to honor what the standard means, to us. The Welcome Party is loud and intense. The standard for the candidates is effort, and performance, and forward progress no matter the task at hand. Practically speaking, whoever is winning is achieving the standard, because winning is always the standard.
