Dec 9, 2024 · GNUnet is a network protocol stack for building secure, distributed, and privacy-preserving applications. With strong roots in academic research, our goal is to replace the old insecure Internet protocol stack.

Please note that the handbook / reference manual uses the graphical user interface (UI) gnunet-gtk to configure GNUnet. In this introduction, we use the command line interface (CLI).

If you were using an Operating System with the APT package manager, GNUnet could be installed as simple as: $ apt-get install gnunet Please beware that some distributions may include outdated GNUnet packages! From source Please refer to the handbook.

GNUnet is not merely a technical project, but also a political mission: like the GNU project as a whole, we are writing software to achieve political goals with a focus on the human right of informational self-determination.

GNUnet is also Free Software and thus the source code is available, so you do not have to worry about being spied upon by the software. The following table summarises the main differences between GNUnet and other systems.

Use gnunet-config -s gns to view the GNS configuration, including all configured external zones that are operated by other users. The respective configuration entry names start with a ., e.g. .pin.gns.alt.
