The Great Northern Railway Class H2 and H3 (classified K1 and K2 by the LNER) was a class of 2-6-0 steam locomotive designed for mixed-traffic work. The class was created as a locomotive which could haul heavier goods trains at speeds of up to 40 mph. The class were later developed into the more powerful H4 (LNER K3) class.

The resulting GNR Class H2 (LNER Class K1) was also the first design to incorporate Gresley's patented double swing link pony truck design. Intended to equalise the weight on the truck's wheels when running on curves, this design would be used for all Gresley designs which incorporated pony trucks.

The Severn Valley Railway has 7 LNER teak coaches including Buffet No. 643, Kitchen Composite No. 7960, Open Thirds Nos, 24105, 43600, 43612, 52250 along with former pre-grouping GNR composite No. 2701. From time to time, as this brief history has sought to show, the locomotive superintendents of the Great Northern Railway have produced exceptionally powerful engines for the heavy mineral traffic of the line. Mr. Sturrock led off with his famous steam tender engines, and Mr. Stirling followed suit with the large mineral engines of 1872.

You have 68 as "61791 Loch Laggan Fort William c1957", but in fact she's on the turntable road at Mallaig - you can make out the jib of one of the railway cranes protruding above the smokebox - whilst 65 shows Loch Lomond in front of the water tank at Mallaig.

LNER J5 (GNR J22) Ivatt built these twenty medium-powered goods locomotives in 1909-10, to meet the increasing goods and coal traffic being experienced by the Great Northern Railway (GNR) at that time.
