The GNR Class J4 engines became LNER J3, and the remaining GNR J5s became LNER J4. A total of 157 GNR J5s entered LNER ownership. The final batch of Ivatt GNR J5s was initially ordered as a batch of twenty five from Dubs & Co. Twenty five were built, but twelve were supplied to the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway (M&GN) in 1900.

Upon the Groupings of 1923, the class became the LNER J3s. The LNER also rebuilt 82 locomotives, with the last rebuild occurring in 1929. By this point, there were only 157 J4s left in service. From 1926 onwards, the J3s were refitted with Ross pop safety valves, as was standard on the LNER. In service, the J3s handled the same duties as the J4s.

Sturrock 400 Class 0-6-0 Ivatt J3 (with 24″ stroke cyls) or J2 (26″). The engines gradually received Stirling boilers, initially 4′-0½” diam. then 4′-2½” after 1878. Full details of changes are not available as repair details only survive for relatively few engines.

Six men held this post during the existence of the Great Northern Railway. Until 1868 engines were obtained from outside manufacturers, but after this date were increasingly built at the railway's own Doncaster Works, commonly known as the "Plant". Some engines acquired second-hand or from absorbed companies have been omitted from these lists.
J66/J67/J68/J69 0-6-0Ts | 68570 1953-10-04 Boston MPD
Built at Stratford in January 1896 as GER No. 394 and withdrawn in September 1961. This is the former GNR's Boston MPD in Lincolnshire and 68570 is in company with ex-GNR Ivatt 'J3' 0-6-0 No. 64131 and another 'J69' No. 68499 (fitted with a dreadful 'stovepipe' chimney). 68570 is on what was known as the ‘back roads’ at Boston Loco.
