During the mid-1920s, the LNER performed a series of B12 bridge tests on the former Great North of Scotland (GNSR) lines, due to an urgent need for greater power. Although the tests were successful, the GER's shortage was critical and transfers to the GNSR district did not take place until 1931 when the GER's shortage had been relieved.

No. 8572 is a preserved 4-6-0 tender steam locomotive. No. 8572 was built in 1928 by Beyer, Peacock and company as builder's number 6157 2 for the London North Eastern Railway to the Great Eastern Railway's S69 class design known as the B12 class to the LNER.

Under the LNER the S69 4-6-0s became class B-12. After the Grouping the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the LNER – Nigel Gresley – set about producing a standard 3-cylinder 4-6-0 for general use.
