Great Northern is historically significant because it was the first Pacific to be built by the Great Northern Railway (GNR) as a prototype of the new '1470 class'. It was also the only original A1 to not be rebuilt by the LNER as an A3. As with most other former GNR locomotives, the LNER increased its number by 3000, making the number 4470.

The first two GNR Pacifics, 1470 Great Northern and 1471 Sir Frederick Banbury were introduced in 1922. [1] The Great Northern board ordered a further ten '1470-class' locomotives, which were under construction at Doncaster at the time of the formation of the LNER in 1923.

Below are the names and numbers of the steam locomotives that comprised the LNER Gresley Classes A1 and A3, that ran on the Great Northern (GNR) and latterly the London and North Eastern Railway network. They represented Nigel Gresley 's attempt to standardise steam design.

The first two engines appeared from Doncaster works as GNR locomotives 1470 and 1471 (later 4470 and 4471 and then BR 60113 and 60102) and they were originally classified as A1 engines. They were a logical development from the GNR Atlantics, but nevertheless caused a sensation and great interest when they arrived.
