Hazard pictograms form part of the international Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). Two sets of pictograms are included within the GHS: one for the labelling of containers and for workplace hazard warnings, and a second for use during the transport of dangerous goods.

OSHA has updated its Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) to primarily align with Revision 7 of the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). The final rule was published on May 20, 2024, with an effective date of July 19, 2024.

Since 1 January 2023, the 7th revised edition of the GHS (GHS 7) must be used to classify and label hazardous chemicals in Australia.
