In Finland, the average market price of forest chips decreased in the 1990s, partly because of a shift from whole-tree chips to logging residue chips. The low point was reached in 2000, since then the average price has increased by almost 20 %.

Forests cover more than 70 per cent of the land area in Finland. A total of 20.3 million hectares is available for timber production, 61% of which is privately owned. Annual forest growth in Finland is approx. 110 million cubic meters, whereas the annual logging volume is approximately 60 to 75 million cubic meters.

Besides fellings, the total roundwood removals and drain include stemwood left in forests as logging residue and stemwood that had died naturally. In 2023 the volume of these types of wood was about 14 million cubic metres. Like in other western European countries, Finnish forest are mostly owned by private individuals and families.
