These were the original Martians until the Guardians of the Universe created a mental block for them: an artificial fear of fire. J'onn had gotten over this fear through practice and the help of a fire wielding love interest.

Fernus has defeated the White Martians and attacks the JLA in the Fortress of Solitude - thankfully for them, Green Lantern is returned to them from Ganthet, with knowledge about the Burning Martians and with a way to temporarily halt the attack.
