The Fractional Excretion of Sodium (FENa) determines if renal failure is due to pre-renal, intrinsic, or post-renal pathology.

The fractional excretion of sodium (FENa) is the percentage of the sodium filtered by the kidney which is excreted in the urine. It is measured in terms of plasma and urine sodium, rather than by the interpretation of urinary sodium concentration alone, as urinary sodium concentrations can vary with water reabsorption.

The drug combination fenfluramine/phentermine, usually called fen-phen, is an anti- obesity medication that is no longer widely available. It was sold in the early 1990s, and utilized two anorectics.

FENa, calculated by measuring creatinine and sodium levels in the blood and urine simultaneously [ (urinary sodium × serum creatinine)/ (urinary creatinine × serum sodium)×100), has been described as an uncomplicated method to determine tubular handling of sodium because it can be calculated at any moment without the measurement of urine volume.

FENa was 0.4% to 0.8%, considerably lower than FENa's measured in eight nonvolume-depleted patients in acute renal failure. Vigorous intravenous fluid therapy in this patient produced a prompt increase in urine volume and improvement in renal function.
