K-9 Major began his career with the Florida Highway Patrol on October 23, 1989. After completion of K-9 Patrol and Drug Detection schools in March 1990, K-9 Major and his handler Trooper Mike Smith were assigned to Troop G, Jacksonville.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit is comprised of 24 dogs and 21 deputies/handlers. There are German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois Mix, Bloodhounds and German Shorthaired Pointers. Each dog has a specialty, such as bomb or narcotics detection or fugitive apprehension.
