2025年2月12日 · Modern renovations, however, continue to make this house accessible: the house tour allows guests to enter by way of an ADA-compliant ramp, take an external lift to the second floor (thus preserving the historic integrity of the home), and view FDR’s ramp and wheelchair from a glass balcony that overlooks the sunken living room.

2022年5月3日 · On January 10, 2001, the Prologue Room was dedicated, complete with a statue of FDR by sculptor Robert Graham. The statue is life size, at ground level, and depicts FDR seated in a wheelchair of his own design- a kitchen chair modified with tricycle wheels. It is set away from a nearby wall to ensure total access.

2012年7月26日 · The building provided not only museum space for visitors and a formal office for FDR but also storage areas for FDR’s vast collections. Because a 1921 attack of polio had left Roosevelt paralyzed from the waist down, FDR primarily used personally-designed wheelchairs for daily mobility.

Early in his presidency, the image of FDR as an exceptionally strong and active leader became firmly fixed in popular culture. That image contrasted sharply with the reality of his physical disability. In 1921, Roosevelt contracted polio. It left him paralyzed below the waist.
