In Bhutan, this includes Technical Cooperation Programs, regional initiatives, and both bilateral and multilateral programs. For the 13th Five-Year Plan, the FAO aims to mobilize approximately USD 83 million through various projects.

The Food System Profile provides a summary of the main food system issues in Bhutan and highlights potential solutions for their sustainable and inclusive transformation. The result of a systemic analysis and stakeholders consultation, it is part of a large-scale assessment supported by the European Union, FAO and CIRAD in 50 countries.

Bhutan is a beneficiary country from the list of HIH priority countries. Hand-in-Hand focuses on countries that struggle with poverty and food security. The initiative applies a framework specifically conceived to identify areas within these countries that have good agricultural potential but also high levels of poverty and hunger.

Bhutan subsequently obtained FAO membership in 1981 and since then the programme of cooperation expanded rapidly and diversified into more extensive and specialized disciplines in line with strengthened capabilities in the sectors of agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry.

These crops were selected based on their nutritional value, climate resilience, economic viability, and local availability. The suitability mapping of these crops aims to ascertain their production potential and identify suitable areas for cultivation.
