The Ferrari F40 (Type F120) is a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car [12] engineered by Nicola Materazzi with styling by Pininfarina. It was built from 1987 until 1992, with the LM and GTE race car versions continuing production until 1994 and 1996 respectively. [15]

The Ferrari F40 LM was more radical, exclusive and exciting than the already extreme F40. A specially prepared engine, which produced between 850-900 horsepower, was developed for the LM. The car boasted a 0-60 time of just 3.1 seconds, a 0-100 time of just 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 230 mph (380 km/h).

Developed by Michelotto, the F40 LM benefitted from enlarged twin IHI turbocharger/ intercooler units and advanced Weber-Marelli fuel injection, which increased power to over 700 bhp.

With some back-door support from the factory, they converted two generations of Ferrari's GT road cars in full blown racers. Initially these Michelotto racers proved very competitive, but the ill-fated 512 BB LM revealed that Ferrari's high-end road cars were no longer suitable for track use.

With over 700 bhp, a reinforced chassis, race-spec transmission, and advanced aerodynamics, the F40 LM achieved remarkable track performance, reaching 0-60 mph in just 3.1 seconds and topping out at 229 mph.
