Late 1950 EMD demonstrated their TR-6 set, numbered 1600 and 1600B, on the SP's Mina and Fallon branches. Due to the success of these, SP purchased these demonstrators, (in April 1951), kept the attractive two-tone red paint, and simply overpainted the Electro-Motive name with Southern Pacific.

2014年10月24日 · Technically a cow and calf are two switch engines both with prime movers permanently coupled together where one does not have a cab. Only made by EMC and EMD. A switch engine and a slug are not a cow calf. Neither is every cabless road unit a calf, e.g. all the GP9B, GP30B, SD24B, SD45B, etc. are not calves they are just B units.
In December, 2004, the Feather River Rail Society added another historic locomotive to its collection at the Portola Railroad Museum. The unit is an EMD TR6 switching locomotive built as a demonstrator and sold to Southern Pacific. A brief his-tory follows: Electro Motive Corporation was a builder of gas-electric motor cars and diesel engines.

As delivered in 1951, the TR-6 had a single-chime horn mounted on the cab front wall. Not until the 1980 shot does the three-chime horn show up on the roof, at the front. The TR-6 A & B units, in common with the SW-8's, were equipped with small pilot plows, on the 'front' end only. This detail would require different mounting of the footboards.
