The BMW E28 is the second generation of BMW 5 Series executive cars, [1] which was produced from 1981 to 1988 and replaced the E12 5 Series. Pre-series production began in April 1981 and the car was introduced in the autumn that year.

The second generation of BMW 5 Series, known as the E28, was introduced for the 1982 model year. The E28 was available with inline four or inline six engines, and was the first BMW car to be offered with a diesel engine. The second generation 5 Series also introduced the now legendary BMW M5 in 1985.

BMW introduced the 528e for the 1983 model year as a variant of the BMW E28 5 Series. The 528e, which was known as the 525e in Europe, was powered by BMW's M20B27 engine. This engine was designed for efficiency (thus the 'e' in 528e) and emphasized low end torque. It displaced 2.7L and generated 123hp (121hp with catalytic converter).
